'The Gamecocks was part of the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1953 through 1970. During that time, the team was ranked as No.15 in the AP poll for 1958 and won the 1969 ACC championship. From 1971 until 1991, it played as an independent team and had six bowl appearances. It had final top 25 rankings in 1984 and 1987 and produced a Heisman Trophy winner, George Rogers, in 1980. The Gamecocks joined the SEC in 1992 and has had many successful years since. The team won the SEC East title in 2010.
