''The Sioux Falls Skyforce is one of the oldest still-running developmental basketball teams now associated with the NBA. Founded in 1989, the franchise was originally a member of the old Continental Basketball Association. The Skyforce won its first-ever CBA title in 1996 with a one-point victory over the Fort Wayne Fury in the final moments of the five-game series. Henry James received the CBA Playoff MVP award for averaging 23.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in the finals. The Skyforce repeated as champions in 2005 with a victory over the Rockford Lightning. It proved to be the team’s final CBA game since the Skyforce soon departed for the newly-formed NBA D-League a year later. Sioux Falls then clinched the 2016 D-League championship in three games over Los Angeles. In 2017, the Miami Heat bought the Skyforce and made it an integral part of its organization. The
Miami Heat
has served as the sole affiliate of the Skyforce since 2013. The Skyforce franchise helps players develop talent and gain experience at the professional level. Most of these players are NBA free agents who can sign with any NBA team. However, a few of the players are under direct contract with the Heat. This means they can be recalled or sent down based on the nature of their contract.
''Two players have won the league MVP in Skyforce history. Kasib Powell, an undrafted small forward out of Texas Tech, won the 2008 MVP Award with 22.2 points and six rebounds in 40 games. Jarnell Stokes, a second-round pick out of Tennessee, won the 2016 MVP Award with 20.6 points and 9.3 rebounds in 28 games. The first NBA player who was ever assigned to the Skyforce was Amir Johnson. The longtime Pistons and Raptors forward averaged 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds over 22 games in 2017.'
'During the 2018 to 2019 season, Sioux Falls finished eighth in the entire Western Conference with a record of 24-26. This left it two spots out of contention for the postseason. The team’s stats leaders were Yante Maten, who averaged 23.5 points and 9.7 rebounds in 30 games, and Duncan Robinson, who averaged 21.4 points in 33 games.'
