Her most famous song -- 1997's Sunny Came Home -- earned Shawn Colvin a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. But the sexagenarian singer-songwriter's career can hardy be limited to a single chart success.

Her clear voice tinged with melancholy, Colvin has been on the country/Americana/folk scene for more than four decades. Her songs reflect the roller coaster ride of her life, one detailed in her 2012 autobiography, Diamond in the Rough. In recent years, she's toured with her old friend Steve Earle, whom she met in the dive bars they both played in their early days in New York. After a successful show at the City Winery in Manhattan, they decided to tour together. That led to a debut album, Colvin and Earle.

Shawn Colvin was destined for the music business. She mastered the guitar at the age of 10, mimicking the sounds she heard coming out of her father's stereo, including songs from the Kingston Trio and Pete Seeger. In the early part of her career she relocated to Austin, Texas, and worked with a local band called the Dixie Diesels. Moving on from Austin, she started playing folk music around Berkeley, Calif., and in Illinois. Later she made her way to New York City, signing with the Buddy Miller Band. After Buddy Miller moved on, the band was renamed as The Shawn Colvin Band. Her reputation grew on the folk circuit in New York, culminating in a tour with Suzanne Vega. That led to a recording contract and the release of her first album, Steady On, in 1989. It won The Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Her follow-up album, Fat City, hit the stores in 1992 and captured a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. In 1997, she rocketed into the mainstream with the hit Sunny Came Home, which remained at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary charts for four weeks.
