Seton Hall began fielding a basketball team in the early 1900s, and they became known as the Pirates in 1931. John Honey Russell was named head coach in 1936 and led the team to national prominence. Russell coached the famous Wonder Five featuring All-American Bob Davies and took the Pirates to its first National Invitation Tournament. P.J. Carlesimo, the Seton Hall coach from 1982 to 1994, led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. In recent years under coach Kevin Willard, the Pirates have appeared in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. The team won the National Invitation Tournament championship in 1953 and has played in the NIT 17 times. The Seton Hall Pirates were runner-up in the 1989 NCAA Tournament title game when it lost to
