The Sentry Tournament of Champions opens the new year with a flourish. Featuring scenic tropical vistas in the stunning island of Maui, the tournament is an early highlight in the PGA calendar. Originally founded in 1953, the tournament was meant as a late-season showcase for the top players on tour. In 1986, it moved to the opening part of the schedule to usher in the new season. However, in 2013, with the advent of the wrap-around season, which begins in September or October of the previous year, the Tournament of Champions suddenly changed positions in the PGA calendar. Since 1999, it has found a permanent home at the Kapalua Resort in Maui. Past winners of the tournament have included Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer. Jack Nicklaus has the most wins in tournament history with five, including 1963, 1964, 1971, 1973 and 1977. If you want to experience an exciting week in Hawaii with some of the top golfers on tour, then you can purchase Sentry Tournament of Champions tickets at StubHub.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions is the only event in the PGA season that restricts the field to players who won a tour-sanctioned tournament or event in the previous calendar year. There is no invitational, no qualifying rounds and no priority rankings. Because the field is so heavily restricted (no more than 35 players typically participate), the tournament does not have a cut after two rounds. However, once they are in the tournament, players may withdraw at any time.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions takes place every January at the beginning of the year; the 2020 tournament was held between January 2nd and 5th. A more detailed schedule will be released closer to the start of the next tournament.
Justin Thomas won the 2020 Tournament of Champions with a score of 14 under par. Following a three-way tie between Thomas, Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele after the regular 72 holes, a sudden death playoff round commenced on the 18th to determine the winner. In the first playoff round, Reed and Thomas both scored a birdie to survive and move on, while Schauffele was eliminated with a par. In the second round, Reed and Thomas tied at par to continue the playoffs. In the third round, Thomas emerged as the victor with a birdie, while Reed only shot a par.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions takes place on the
Plantation Course
at Kapalua. Originally designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore in 1991, the course stretches for more than 7,400 yard along the slopes of the West Maui Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It has a total of three par-3 holes and four par-5 holes. Golfers can expect to find large greens, wide fairways and plenty of downhill tee shots. The longest hole on the course can be found at the par-5 18th, which has a particularly aggressive slope, while the shortest hole is the par-3 11th. A 2019 redesign by Crenshaw and Coore changed up some facets of the course. They resurfaced greens, renovated bunkers and made some minor modifications to the holes.
