The biggest rivals to the San Jose State Spartans are the
Fresno State Bulldogs
, who represent California State University, Fresno. With the schools' close proximity and long-standing competition in the Mountain West Conference, it was a sure bet that these two football teams would be instant opponents. Due to Fresno being the largest city within the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley and San Jose being the largest city in the metropolitan Silicon Valley, it stands to reason that there may be some fun-loving cultural hostility behind the two rivalries as well. To raise the stakes, the winning team of annual rivalry games takes home the Valley Trophy. Dating back to 1921, the matchup between the Spartans and the Bulldogs is a game that you don't want to miss.
''As of 2017, 132 former Spartan football players have gone on to play in the National Football League. San Jose State University is also one of only five schools to produce two alumni, Bill Walsh and Dick Vermeil, that went on to coach Super Bowl-winning teams. Former player Steve Clarkson went on to create the Steve Clarkson Dreammaker quarterback camp. After playing for the Spartans, Neal Dahlen went on to break a world record by winning seven Super Bowl rings. Terry Donahue became head coach at UCLA and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.'
