San Jose has a long history with the MLS. Originally known as the Clash (changed to the Earthquakes in 2000), San Jose was one of the 10 charter members of the league in the 1996 opening season. Though the Earthquakes struggled through the first seven years, the club ascended to the top of the 2001

MLS Cup

in a close 2-1 extra time battle with the LA Galaxy. Landon Donovan and Dwayne De Rosario scored a goal each. San Jose returned to the title game in 2003 and defeated the

Chicago Fire

by a score of 4-2. After the ownership group failed to secure the rights to a new stadium, the franchise departed to Houston, Texas, and the Earthquakes went on hiatus for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. However, San Jose made a triumphant return as an expansion franchise for the 2008 season and won the regular season conference crown again in 2012. Chris Wondolowski is the all-time leading goal scorer for both San Jose and the entire MLS. If you want to catch a live match, get your San Jose Earthquakes tickets at StubHub.
