'Since 2010, the San Diego State Aztecs have arguably been the top basketball team in the Mountain West Conference. However, the program had humble beginnings when it started in 1921 as a member of the Southern California JC conference. In 1941, the Aztecs won the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. San Diego State finally became an NCAA Division I team in 1970. After leaving the Western Athletic Conference in 1999, the program became a member of the Mountain West Conference. Since then, the Aztecs team has won five Mountain West Conference tournaments. It has been to eight NCAA Tournaments as well as four NIT tournaments. During the 2010-2011 season, the team ranked fourth in America and won its first game in an NCAA Tournament, going all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. 'Tony Gwynn is probably the most notable player from the Aztec basketball team since he also went on to be a star player in Major League Baseball. Other notable players include Art Linkletter, Kawhi Leonard, Brandon Heath and Michael Cage. Notable head coaches include Steve Fisher, Fred Trenkle, Tony Fuller, Jim Brandenburg, Smokie Gaines, Tim Vezie and George Ziegenfuss. The team's current head coach is Brian Dutcher.'
'The Aztec basketball team plays its home games at the former Cox Arena, now known as Viejas Arena. This venue is situated on the west side of the campus. It originally opened for play in 1997, and it seats over 12,400 fans for basketball games. The arena has seven locker rooms, and two of those locker rooms have team rooms, a shared training room and equipment rooms. Before playing at the Viejas Arena, the Aztecs basketball team played at Peterson Gym. Prior to that, the team played at the San Diego Sports Arena.'

The San Diego State Aztecs' team has three main rivalries: the University of San Diego Toreros,
UNLV Rebels
and
Brigham Young University Cougars.
The most notable rival is the UNLV Rebels. This rivalry has produced some memorable games in recent years. The USD Toreros team is the Aztecs' crosstown competitor. The two teams meet and play each year in a non-conference game called the City Championship. The rivalry with BYU has died down since the Cougars left the Mountain Western Conference for the West Coast Conference. However, a rivalry with the New Mexico Lobos seems to have taken its place.
''As with every sports team in San Diego, the SDSU Aztecs are known for having an excellent tailgating party scene. Typically, some tailgaters will set up the night before while other join early in the day prior to the event. Fans, alumni, students and parents celebrate all across the university’s large campus. San Diego is known for many award-winning craft breweries, and this is a frequent addition to the gourmet barbecues the fans set up.'
'The team had a 21-13 record for the 2018-2019 season. This led to a fourth-place finish in the conference standings.'
