The Rockford IceHogs started their history as a team in 1999 by officially joining the United Hockey League. The name came from a newspaper poll of local residents and beat out other potential team names, such as Mighty Oaks, Rockets, Roughnecks, Ice Rangers and Ricochets. In 2007, the IceHogs made the move to the American Hockey League as the top affiliate of the

Chicago Blackhawks

with an initial 10-year agreement. They won their first UHL championship in May of the same year, which also happened to mark the last UHL contest.
