The Rochester Red Wings are the oldest continually operating franchise outside of Major League Baseball. The team was initially created in 1899, but 1928 saw them adopt the name Red Wings and join the International League. The Red Wings name was initially chosen as a nod to Rochester's first parent organization, the St. Louis Cardinals, but the name has been kept through multiple affiliations. The Cardinals were the Red Wings' parent organization for their first 32 years before the 1961 season saw the Baltimore Orioles take over the franchise. The team's time under the Orioles' umbrella was as successful as their time with St. Louis. The Red Wings went on to win six International League championships between 1961 and 2002. Before the start of the 2003 season it was announced the team would become the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. The Rochester Red Wings have been at the top of the Twins' farm system for the last 17 seasons. Get your Rochester Red Wings tickets at StubHub.
The lengthy history of the Rochester Red Wings includes many Major League Baseball Hall of Fame members and others who could make a strong case for induction. Legendary pitchers like Bob Gibson, Curt Schilling and Mike Mussina took the mound in Rochester on their way to the Majors. Other legends include Cal Ripken Jr., Stan The Man Musial, Justin Morneau and Tim McCarver. The Red Wings have also seen a group of iconic managers over their existence including Cal Ripken Sr., Earl Weaver and Frank Robinson.
The Red Wings of Rochester spent the first 68 years of their existence playing in historic Silver Field. In 1997, Frontier Field was opened, and the team moved into the 10,840-seat stadium that they still call home today. The stadium revolves around embracing the history of the Rochester Red Wings with banners that surround the concourses. In addition to the nearly 11,000 seats, fans can choose to sit on the grassy berms beyond the right and left field walls. The new video boards provide a modern touch to a stadium that does a great deal to highlight the history of the team it houses.
The Red Wings make up one-third of one of the most notable rivalries in all of professional sports. The Red Wings battle with the other two International League teams in New York in a round-robin style tournament to decide which team is the best in the state. The Thruway Rivalry Cup is awarded to the team that wins the most head-to-head contests between the Rochester Red Wings, the
Buffalo Bisons
and the
Syracuse Mets
.
The Rochester Red Wings announced that former Red Wings utility man Toby Gardenhire would be the new manager for the team in 2020. If the name Gardenhire sounds familiar, it's because his dad, Ron, is a former Twins manager and is the current manager for the Twins' division rival, the Detroit Tigers. Over the last two seasons, Toby Gardenhire has led the Single-A Cedar Rapids team and the Advanced-A Fort Myers squad to the playoffs. Gardenhire becomes the 16th manager in the team's long history to manage the team after playing for Rochester, and the first former Red Wings player to take the helm in almost 20 years.
