It may be the smallest state in the nation, but there's a lot of history and culture packed into this 1,212-square-mile slice of land along the Atlantic Ocean. Featuring cities as beautiful and dynamic as Providence and Newport and miles of scenic coastline in between, The Ocean State packs a lot of punch into a small area.

As Rhode Island's capital, Providence is at the epicenter of not just its political scene but also its cultural one. Check out your favorite touring performers at the historic Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, an important bastion of the music scene that brings the best of pop, rock and blues to a smaller-than-usual venue, making for an intimate concert experience. The Columbus Theatre is another must-see stop that hosts not only concerts but also theatrical productions, film screenings and more.

Head down the coast to Newport to experience some of the best festivals the East Coast has to offer, including the Newport Folk Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival.

Because of its small size, Rhode Island may not have quite the same array of professional sports teams that other states can boast, but sports fans will enjoy seeing the Providence Bruins take the ice at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Rhode Island also many smaller sports teams, such as the Providence Sky Chiefs of the Premier Basketball League and the Pawtucket Red Sox, a Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
