The first Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival was held in Tyler, Texas, May 3, 2014. The historic blending of grassroots country music and the best of Texas BBQ featured the Randy Rogers Band as headliners in the inaugural year. The band was joined by

and The Biggby's. In 2014, 15 barbecue restaurants served up brisket, sausage and ribs, including La Barbecue, Blacks, Hutchins and Louis Mueller. By the 2019 festival, 25 of the top barbecue purveyors in Texas were serving their specialties at the festival. The first year, 1500 hungry music fans enjoyed the festival in T.B. Butler Fountain Plaza in downtown Tyler. In 2019, 6000 people attended the Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival. The festival sells out every year.
The Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival was started to bring great Texas BBQ and music to the citizens of Tyler while revitalizing the downtown Tyler area. Red dirt country music originated in Oklahoma and is named for the red soil of that state. However, the genre is closely related to Texas Outlaw music, and the two have melded into the kind of music you will hear at the Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival. Proceeds from the annual event benefit The Heart of Tyler/Tyler Mainstreet. By 2019, the Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival had become so popular that it spawned a spin-off event in January just to announce the May line-up.

The Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival is a family-friendly food and music event. Doors open at noon for VIPs. VIP admission includes beer tickets and a T-shirt. General Admission ticket holders can enter at 1:45 p.m. to enjoy BBQ samples before the music begins. Doors open at 3:45 p.m. for concert-only ticket holders. Vendor booths sell crafts and T-shirts, beer is available for sale and often soft drinks are given away. Many of the BBQ tents sell samples to concert-only ticket holders late into the afternoon, and food trucks are also on-site.
The next Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival will be held on May 2, 2020, in downtown Tyler, Texas. The music line-up will be announced in early 2020.
The Red Dirt Music & BBQ Festival hosts artists on two stages for nearly 12 hours of continuous music. Headliners play on the Stonewater Roofing Stage.
