Real Salt Lake officially began playing in 2005 as the 12th team in MLS history. The name was chosen not only to invoke the rich soccer heritage of clubs like Real Madrid, but also to convey a sense of royalty and preeminence. After narrowly making the playoffs, Real Salt Lake won the 2009
MLS Cup
with an intense 1-1 shootout win over a star-packed
LA Galaxy
squad, which featured Landon Donovan and David Beckham. Robbie Findley scored the equalizing goal for Salt Lake in the 64th minute, but it took seven rounds of penalty kicks to finally secure the victory. On the international stage, the club also finished as the runner-up of the 2011
Concacaf Champions League
, losing 3-2 to Monterrey on aggregate score. Alvaro Saborio, who played for the club between 2010 and 2015, is Salt Lake’s all-time leading scorer with 63 goals in 127 appearances. To experience some of the most exciting soccer in the United States, purchase Real Salt Lake tickets at StubHub.
