Queensryche is an American heavy metal band officially formed in Bellevue, Wash., in 1982, and in the beginning, the band was known as The Mob, after the

Black Sabbath

song The Mob Rules. Changing its name in 1982 and re-naming themselves after their song Queen of the Reich, the band eventually secured Geoff Tate for vocals, Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo playing guitars, Eddie Jackson playing bass and Scott Rockenfield playing drums. Queensryche's first two studio albums, 1984's

The Warning

and 1986's

Rage for Order,

achieved modest success, but the band's rise to fame came with their release of its 1988 concept album

Operation: Mindcrime.

Two singles came from this album: Eyes of a Stranger and I Don't Believe in Love - the latter being Queensryche's most recognizable song to this day. Even though Tate left Queensryche in 2012 and was replaced by Todd La Torre, the band remains well known to this day for Tate's soaring and operating vocals.

Revolution Calling

Operation: Mindcrime

was a concept album revolving around the story of a junkie named Nikki, who had been kidnapped and brainwashed into performing assassinations for a secretive organization that targets political leaders. It weaves the story of his misplaced loyalty to the organization, his attempts to overcome his conditioning and his love for a reformed prostitute who becomes a nun named Mary. Throughout 1988 and 1989, Queensryche toured to support the album, sharing the stage with other 1980's metal heavyweights like

Guns N' Roses

and

Metallica.

As a result, the album would hit gold in 1989 and then platinum in 1991. It would also peak at No. 50 on the

Billboard

200. Queensryche's subsequent album, 1990's

Empire,

would improve on that success, peaking at No. 7 on the

Billboard

200. The single Silent Lucidity would also reach No. 9 on the

Billboard

Hot 100. Their fifth album, 1994's

Promised Land,

would be their highest-charting album to date, reaching No. 3 on the

Billboard

200. With these albums, Queensryche would become pioneers and innovators in progressive metal. Other notable Queensryche albums include
