Hailing from the small town of West Lafayette, the Purdue Boilermakers' basketball team is defined by its gritty toughness and stout defense. In the pre-tournament days, Purdue was named the 1932 National Champions with All-American guard John Wooden. In the tournament era, Purdue has qualified for two Final Fours. The 1968 to 1969 team, led by forward Rick Mount and Head Coach George King, finished first in the Big Ten and made it all the way to the NCAA Finals but lost to the legendary
UCLA Bruins
team coached by John Wooden. The 1979-1980 team lost to UCLA in the Final Four (this time led by head coach Larry Brown) but beat
Iowa
in the third-place consolation game. A year after the Final Four appearance, Gene Keady took over head coaching duties from Lee Rose. Though he did not qualify for the Final Four during his tenure, Keady did amass 512 wins, the most in Purdue history. After Keady retired in 2005, Southern Illinois coach Matt Painter took over and maintained the same consistent success. He won the Coach of the Year and his team reached the Elite Eight in 2019. ''Mackey Arena, which has served as the home of the Boilermakers' basketball team since 1967, has a seating capacity of just under 15,000 after renovations done in 2007 and 2012. Both club seats and courtside seating are available for all home basketball games.'
'Mackey Arena features plenty of things for fans to experience. In the Northwest corner of the arena stands the seven-foot-tall bronze John Wooden statue, which was first dedicated in 2016. Behind the statue is the pyramid of success, which shows the character qualities of a true champion. Of course, home games are also noted for the rabid fanbase, which sports the team colors of black and gold. You'll likely hear students chanting the university’s official fight song, Hail Purdue!'
