Sprawled beneath the magnificent thrust of Mount Hood, Portland, Oregon, is one of the Pacific Northwest's largest cities, and the arts and culture are more than keeping up. It's come a long way since Lewis and Clark first made contact with the region in 1805. In fact, this city has emerged in recent years as a hip center of counterculture and activism, as well as an important breeding ground for the punk and indie rock genres.

But Portland's against-the-grain vibes show up nowhere better than in its music festivals: from the Pickathon Indie Roots Music Festival to MusicFest NW to the Portland Jazz Festival, there's a lot of annual musical fun to keep you on your toes. There are also tons of food festivals and hilarious and quintessentially Portlandian events such as the Naked Bike Ride and the Big Float, which pay tribute to the quirkily athletic nature of the local populace. And, of course, there's the beloved Oregon County Fair!

Looking to get your major league sports fix? Portland is home to a major league soccer team, the Portland Timbers, which plays at Providence Park, as well as a National Basketball Association team, the Portland Trail Blazers, which plays at the Moda Center.
