Geoff Loomis is the head coach of the Portland Pilots’ baseball team. He has held this position since June 2015. An alumnus of the University of Portland, Coach Loomis is known as one of the most decorated players throughout the history of the baseball program and is a member of the University of Portland Athletic Hall of Fame. Joe Etzel Field is well-known around the country as the home Loomis built. This is due to Geoff Loomis' many accomplishments during his time as a player on the team in 1990-1992. Before accepting the position as the Portland Pilots’ baseball head coach, he spent 13 seasons coaching the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team.
Many notable players have been a part of the Portland Pilots baseball team. Current and former MLB players such as Eric Hull, Rocky Gale, Austin Bibens-Dirkx and Bill Krueger were all discovered while playing with the Portland Pilots.
The team has won two national titles within its NCAA West Coast Conference division. These championship wins occurred in 1989 and 1991.
Joe Etzel Field, named for a former Portland athletic director and long-time head baseball coach, is the home stadium for the Portland Pilots. The field has a seating capacity to accommodate 1,300 spectators. Construction on the stadium was completed in 2005. The surface throughout the playing field is covered with AstroTurf. The largest single-game attendance count was 1,092 on March 22, 2016, when the Portland Pilots took on the
