Polyphia tour dates

Dubbing themselves with the descriptor pop goes progressive, Texas's Polyphia plays progressive metal heavily influenced by other, more unlikely genres: hip-hop and pop. Citing acts like August Alsina and Drake in their songwriting, Polyphia takes metal to a surprising place.

The band have performed all over the United States and Europe as part of a Polyphia tour and have supported acts like Between the Buried and Me. Some prominent venues where they've taken the stage include the House of Blues in New Orleans, the Gramercy Theatre in New York and Musik & Frieden in Berlin.

Polyphia's background

Tim Henson and Scott LePage began playing guitar together in their junior year of high school in Texas, but didn't form Polyphia until 2010. They bonded over a love of deathcore music, the metal sound that became the basis for their early work together. In 2011, the teenage duo released an initial demo, called Resurrect, during which time they considered including a vocalist in their sound. Eventually, they opted against it, releasing the demo without vocals and cementing their act's future sound as an instrumental band.

After several lineup changes, LePage and Henson solidified their band by adding bassist Clay Gober in 2012 and drummer Clay Aeschliman in 2016.

Polyphia members' personal lives

Henson and LePage grew up just minutes from each other. Henson grew up in Plano, Texas. He learned violin early on but, to his disappointment, discovered at age 10 that those skills didn't translate to his playing the guitar. Nevertheless, he stuck with it and spent the next five years playing guitar nearly nonstop. LePage's childhood followed similar lines, with his father also teaching him to play guitar from an early age. As LePage told Guitar World Magazine, he would wait for his father to come home from work to teach him songs. After a while, LePage could play songs by Black Sabbath and other bands by ear.

Polyphia's career milestones

Polyphia released their first EP, Inspire, in 2013. It showed the band moving away from the rough death metal in favor of a more melodic feel, and it also introduced the song Impassion, a track that served as their breakout work. Impassion went viral on YouTube, partially due to the video's interesting visual but DIY aesthetic - it was shot in Dallas' arts district - and partially because it showcased the musicians' technical skills by filming close-ups of their guitar runs.

The band released their debut full-length album, Muse, in 2015. It was well-liked, with Metal Injection noting it contained really great instrumental music that stays away from the pitfalls of modern instrumental metal. Their follow-up, 2016's Renaissance, earned critical acclaim, with Sputnik Music calling the work a very uplifting and atmospheric experience.
