The Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel was created by late sportscaster Myron Cope who encouraged fans to bring yellow dish towels to a 1975 playoff game and wave them during the game to show support. Fans filled the stands with waving towels, the Steelers won that game and moved on to the Super Bowl. The organization then had gold towels made in advance of the championship game, printed with “Myron Cope’s Terrible Towel”. The Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl and the legend and legacy of the Terrible Towel was born! Today, all proceeds of the Steelers Terrible Towels go to the Allegheny Valley School in Pittsburgh which cares for children, adults and seniors with mental and physical disabilities.
