The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the oldest franchises in major league baseball and have played in Pittsburgh since the beginning. The team is as much a part of the city’s history, as it is baseball’s history. PNC Park is a must-see destination for many baseball fans and catching a home game there is a fantastic experience, win or lose.
An MLB heritage team, the Pittsburgh Pirates were founded in 1881. The Pirates have won 9 division titles (while in the NL East), 9 National League Pennants, and appeared in 7 World Series games, bringing home 5 of those Championships. The Pirates biggest division rivals are the Cincinnati Reds. There have been many fierce games with playoff implications between them along with a few brawls since the Pirates moved to the NL Central.
Going to a Pittsburgh Pirates home game at PNC Park is always a good time. It’s one of the best, most attractive ballparks in the Majors with fantastic field views from every seat, and stunning views of the Alleghany River and city skyline. There’s a lot to see and do at the ballpark, so go early and enjoy it all.

Team Name: Pittsburgh Pirates

Stadium Name: PNC Park
Pittsburgh Pirates Team Colors: Black, Gold, White
The Pittsburgh Pirates play at PNC Park, which opened on the North Shore of the Alleghany River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 2001, with a seating capacity of 38,747. PNC Park is one of the most beautiful ballparks in the Major Leagues with, arguably, the best scenic backdrop of them all. It’s on many baseball fans “must see ballpark” lists. The second smallest in the MLB, PNC Park is intimate and well designed with breathtaking views of the river and downtown Pittsburgh on the opposite shore. The Roberto Clemente Bridge spans the river and becomes a pedestrian only walkway on Pirates game days. PNC Park was built in a classic ballpark style using Kasota stone, and the steel trusses and entryway arches are reminiscent of a former Pirates home, Forbes Field. This is a well-designed ballpark, start to finish. Seats are comfortable with stellar views as the highest seat is only 88-feet away from the field. And there are bleacher seat sections in the outfield if you’re looking for the full old-school experience. There’s a brew pub in left field with a 500-person party deck on the roof and you’ll find lots of social gathering areas throughout the park with great views of the playing field and the city. There’s a strong sense of history at PNC Park with statues and various tributes to past players, plus the Hall of Fame baseballs along the Riverwalk, so go early to explore it all. Food choices include many Steel Town favorites, from mile-high deli sandwiches to perogies. Speaking of perogies, The Great Pittsburgh Pierogi Race happens after the fifth inning at every game and is a lot of fun, with pierogi mascots racing down the field. If you’re bringing the kids, they’ll love the recently expanded kid’s zone that runs along the river with a climbing pirate ship and bouncy bridge. The atmosphere is laid back and many fans enjoy coming out for a nice summer night at the park, win or lose. No other ballpark showcases its hometown as brilliantly as PNC Park does Pittsburgh, which also makes it a popular place to take out of town visitors. This is a ballpark that has grown even more attractive with age and was ranked No. 1 Best Ballpark 2024 by USA Today. That is thanks in part to the franchise's commitment to constantly monitoring and improving the fan experience. Improvements in recent years include more gathering spaces, a redesigned concourse, and technology upgrades like the massive new scoreboard out in left field. But when it comes down to it, the chance of watching the team hit a splash down home run into the Allegheny River is something that just can’t be improved on!

The Pittsburgh Pirates are part of the National League Central along with the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates have an ongoing division rivalry with the Reds which has resulted in some heated yelling matches and fights since they joined the NL Central.
Notable current Pittsburgh Pirates players include All Star center fielder and switch hitter Bryan Reynolds, who recorded a hit in 25 consecutive games during 2024 and has the ability to contribute in multiple positions; center fielder Andrew McCutchen recorded the eighth, 20-homer season of his career during 2024; short stop and center fielder Oneil Cruz, who set an MLB record for the hardest-hit home run in 2022 (122.4 mph) battled some injuries this season; and first baseman Rowdy Tellez, a slugger who landed home run No. 100 of his career during July 2024.
Pittsburgh Pirates fans are one of the most dedicated fan bases in the MLB. Their support is about more than a love of baseball, it’s tied in with city pride and family tradition. The Pirates earned three playoff appearances in a row from 2013-15 but have struggled in recent years. Despite a 9-season playoff drought, fans continue to show up at PNC Park. Yes, they're frustrated and would rather see the Bucs winning, but Pittsburgh is a town that’s united through sports and it’s a badge of honor to stick it out. Family ties run deep, and many were born into their love of baseball and fierce pride for the city of Pittsburgh. Older fans remember being awed by their first game with parents or grandparents at Three Rivers Stadium, or even Forbes Field. These fans understand that they’re in one of the smaller markets and are incredibly proud of their city’s investment in PNC Park, currently one of the best ballparks in the Majors. The ballpark showcases the beauty of Pittsburgh and it’s a favorite spot to bring out of town friends to enjoy a game and the iconic views of the city skyline, Alleghany River and Roberto Clemente Bridge. For these fans it’s a no-brainer, the Pirates are your city’s team and you root for YOUR team, win or lose. It’s tradition, it’s family, and a lifetime of loving the Steel City and the historic Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates organization knows that their fans are golden and recently became the first team in professional baseball to engage a market research firm to conduct insight studies with segmented groups of fans to help them make the best, fan-led decisions. Buy Pittsburgh Pirates tickets on StubHub and get out to experience a game at the stunning PNC Park.

Pirates legend, Roberto Clemente was the first Latino inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He played his entire career (which was cut short) with the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1955 to 1972, and what an incredible career it was! Roberto Clemente hailed from Puerto Rico and faced a lot of the anti-Latino discrimination that was common in baseball at the time. No player has been a greater inspiration to Latino players than Clemente. He was a remarkable player in right field and at bat, with a .317 career average, 240 home runs, and his career 3,000 hits remains a team record in Pittsburgh. Clemente was a 15-time All Star, and won 4 batting titles, 12 straight Golden Glove awards, the 1966 NL MVP award, and was named World Series MVP in 1971. But Clemente is an inspiration beyond his extraordinary talents on the field. A quiet, humble person, Roberto was well known for his humanitarian efforts and is quoted as saying, "Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth." On New Year’s Eve, 1972, Roberto Clemente’s life was cut tragically short. He was helping fly much needed relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims when the plane’s engine failed shortly after takeoff from Puerto Rico and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, a mile offshore. All 5 passengers died that day. The bridge that crosses the Allegheny River connecting downtown Pittsburgh to PNC Park is named after Roberto Clemente, a statue of him is at the foot of the bridge, and his images are found throughout the ballpark. Some call Clemente the City of Pittsburgh’s conscience. Today, each MLB Club nominates a player to be considered for the Roberto Clemente Award. It's given annually to the player who best represents the game of baseball, through their exemplary character, philanthropy, community involvement and positive contributions to sport and humanity, on and off the field.
