Thomas Lauderdale, the founder of Pink Martini, worked in politics and found that political fundraisers often featured boring music. He decided to take care of that issue by creating his own group that would incorporate many musical genres into its music so that it would appeal to a broad audience. He later invited his friend from Harvard, China Forbes, to come sing with the band.
