Thomas Lauderdale, the founder of Pink Martini, worked in politics and found that political fundraisers often featured boring music. He decided to take care of that issue by creating his own group that would incorporate many musical genres into its music so that it would appeal to a broad audience. He later invited his friend from Harvard, China Forbes, to come sing with the band. Forbes is able to sing in 15 languages and has added a distinct flair to the band that allows it to capture the rich diversity that is reflective of the United States. In its repertoire, the band has songs in 25 different languages. While Lauderdale originally intended for the band to create music that would liven up political fundraisers, he instead created a sound that would transcend cultures and land the group awards and accolades worldwide.

Pink Martini has quite a few members who are as diverse as the music the band creates. These members include China Forbes, Storm Large, Thomas Lauderdale, Robert Taylor, Gavin Bondy, Achilles Liarmakopoulos, Dan Faehnle, Phil Baker, Nicholas Crosa, Timothy Nishimoto, Brian Lavern Davis, Miguel Bernal, Reinhardt Melz, Antonis Andreou, Pansy Chang, Maureen Love, Kyle Mustain, Mihail Lossifov, Dimitar Karamfilov, Andre Borger, Jimmie Herrod and Edna Vazquez. At any particular show, you can expect between 10 and 12 musicians on stage.
When Lauderdale started the group, he wanted something that could fit in at any political function, so he decided to pick a name that included no indication of political preferences. The name Pink Martini was inspired by the famous movie
Breakfast at Tiffany's
, starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.
