Pinehurst Resort History

Pinehurst Resort is a North Carolina golf resort situated on 5,500 acres of land and consisting of 8 different courses. The land was bought by James Walker Tufts at around $1.25 per acre in 1895, the same year the club was established. It has hosted several major tournaments including the North and South Open which was the most prestigious golf tournament in the country while it was stages at Pinehurst from 1902 through 1951. Pinehurst hosted its first PGA tournament in 1936 and continues to host major tournaments to this day. It is regarded as one of the best and most historic golf clubs in the world and its Course 1 and Course 2 are especially esteemed.

Pinehurst Resort Events

There have been numerous big time golf tournaments that have taken place at Pinehurst Resort, and several of the best golfers in the world have won tournaments on its courses including: Denny Shute who won the 1936 PGA Championship, Payne Stewart who won the 199 U.S. Open, Michael Campbell who won the 2005 U.S. Open, and Danny Lee who won the 2008 U.S. Amateur Tournament. Pinehurst also hosted the Ryder Cup in 1951 which the United States won. Pinehurst is set to host the U.S. Open and the Women's U.S. Open once again in 2014, and it will be interesting to see if another legend will win it this time or an up and coming young golfer.

Spending a lovely summer day outside walking a beautiful course and seeing the best golfers in the world battle one another is an experience you will never forget and one which will likely have you wanting to never have to settle for watching from your couch again. As the days and holes wear on, the drama builds and each stroke becomes more and more vital. The nervous tension in the air builds and this can be felt both by the golfers swinging their clubs and the fans following them from hole to hole holding their breath with each approach to the ball.

In addition to its world famous golf courses, Pinehurst resort has a lawn bowling court and three croquet courts. The croquet professional at Pinehurst is Mack Penwell, a retired U.S. national champion and hall of fame member. The best croquet players from all over the country are drawn to the championship level croquet courts at Pinehurst.
