With Andrew Eldritch’s gloomy voice and the band’s stylish brand of rock, Sisters of Mercy became ghoulish superstars in the English goth scene of the ‘80s. Despite some fireworks between members that set the band back and caused an early break-up, Eldritch still takes the music that defined an eyeline-wearing generation on the road. Named after an order of Catholic nuns, the Sisters of Mercy took off where post-punk godfathers like Bahaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees left off. Forming in 1980, the band’s first album, First and Last and Always, became a staple for vamping youth. By 1985, tensions within the band ruptured it, forming several splinter groups, including the Mission UK and Ghost Dance.
Besides offering introspective, moody lyrics, the vocals of singer Andrew Eldritch helped define the band by providing a dark and depressing sound. But at heart, their music was catchy rock, and allowed the band to thrive commercially. Goth has long been put to rest in its cultural crypt, but Sisters of Mercy tickets are sure to bring some pale-faced fans back from the dead!
