'The University of San Diego’s men’s basketball team started during the 1955-56 basketball season. In 1984, the Toreros won their first WCC title back when it was still known as the West Coast Athletic Conference. The win was propelled by the play of forward Mike Whitmarsh along with the guidance of head coach Jim Brovelli. Since then, the men’s basketball team has appeared four times in the NCAA Tournament. They advanced to the Round of 36 in the tourney for the first time in 2008. For the 2019-20 season, the Toreros men’s basketball team will get the chance to prove themselves in non-conference games against Cal and rival San Diego State. The Toreros kicks off the WCC season with two road games against Santa Clara and LMU. You can grab your San Diego Toreros tickets at StubHub.'
'For the 2019-20 season, the team is composed of Marion Humphrey, Braun Hartfield, Joey Calcaterra, Noel Coleman, Sabry Philip, Finn Sullivan, Mikal Gjerde, Felipe Doria, Alex Floresca, Jared Rodriguez, James Jean-Marie, Yauhen Massalski, Reggie Parris and Vladimir Pinchuk.'
'Sam Scholl took over the reins as head coach of the San Diego Toreros in April 2018. He is the 13th coach in the history of the men’s basketball program at the university. Before being the team’s coach, he also played for the Toreros back in the 1998-2000 basketball seasons. During his time with the Toreros, the team was able to post a 38-18 two-year record. He spent his after-graduation years helping former USD head coach Brad Holland in shaping the team for seven seasons. His time in the background includes the West Coast Conference Basketball Championship trip and the first-round play of the team at the 2003 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Tournament.'
'Scholl is not the only person behind the success of the Toreros. He is joined by several individuals, including assistant coaches David Carter, Terrence Rencher and Jerry Brown. The staff also includes Lance Lavetter as director of basketball operations, Ken Rancifer as a graduate assistant, Max Lamoreaux as director of athletic performance and Eli Bisnett-Cobb as director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer.'
'
The 2018-19 basketball season saw the Toreros playing for the first time under Scholl. The team finished seventh place in the WCC during the season with a record of 21-15 (7-9 WCC). The team was able to reach the semifinals of the WCC Tournament after defeating Portland, Santa Clara and
Brigham Young University
. However, the Toreros failed to further advance after suffering a loss against Saint Mary’s. The Toreros also receive an at-large bid at the 2019 National Invitation Tournament but lost to Memphis only in the first round.
''San Diego State University is the biggest rival of the Toreros basketball team. The rivalry started during the 2001-02 season and has since seen the Toreros 3-12 against the San Diego State Aztecs. The biggest win by the Toreros against its biggest rival came in the 2012-13 season in a game held at Petco Park, where the game ended 53-48.'
