Mushroomhead was developed as a side project for a group of musicians. To avoid rumors and confusion regarding the group members, they took the stage in masks and costumes to conceal the band members identities. The group played their first show in 1993 and soon were playing shows with legendary metal band, GWAR. The band's second ever performance came at the Cleveland Agora, opening for GWAR. 2,000 people were in attendance to see the show. The performance helped the band develop a following early in their career. In 1995, the group released their self-titled debut album.

As the years progressed, Mushroomhead became the priority for the group members as the other bands they were in broke up. Throughout the '90s, the band released several albums that were self financed. As the group developed new fans, they became known for their great live shows. The band has a tendency to play concerts in smaller venues, making seeing the group feel more intimate. Tickets for their 2015 shows are selling fast and will likely sell out soon.
