Mike Dunlap has been the head coach at Loyola Marymount since 2013. Before coming to Loyola, Dunlap served most recently as head coach over the
Charlotte Bobcats
, now the Hornets. Before that, Dunlap also served as an associate head coach at
St. John's University
, the
University of Oregon
and the
University of Arizona
. During his time with Loyola, Dunlap led the Lions to successfully better seasons for each of his first four years. For the 2018-19 season at Loyola, Dunlap's team had the best start to a season and the best one-loss record to open a year at 11-1. The Lions also went to the postseason for only the third time since 1990. The Lions won the 2018 Jamaica Classic and made it to the semi-finals of the College Basketball Invitational. LMU's winning record for 2018-19 was 22 games, which was double the wins from the previous season and the third-highest winning record for the program. The Lions ended the year with a 12-4 home record and entered the WCC Championship games as the fifth seed.
''The Gerston Pavilion is the home of the Lions basketball team. It was opened in 1981 and has a seating capacity of 4,156. The arena was updated for 2019 with a brand-new athletic mark on the court floor with vivid crimson and blue. The lighting has also been updated and now has programming options. There are court lines for volleyball and for basketball that allow for easy transitioning, and the extended men's three-point line is now visible. In 2019, the NCAA approved moving the three-point line to 22 feet and 1 and 3/4 inches to match the international basketball distance. This rule is effective across Division I for the 2019-20 season.'
'The Lions have a long-standing rivalry with Pepperdine. Recently, both schools have created the Pacific Coast Highway Cup as a point-tracking system for games between the Lions and the Waves. The schools are represented by 12 of their athletic teams through the regular and postseason games over the academic year. Points are awarded by various criteria for each game. As of 2019, Pepperdine is ahead of LMU in total PCH Cup annual awards.'

The Lions are members of the West Coast Conference, which was formed in 1952 as the California Basketball Association and has 10 schools under its umbrella. The WCC originally had five schools, which expanded to eight when Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and
Fresno State
joined the conference in 1956. At the same time, the conference changed its name to the West Coast Athletic Conference. The conference shortened its name to the West Coast Conference in 1981, and the conference gained its 10th member in 2013.

The Lions enjoy a varied schedule each year with competitions inside and outside their conference. For the 2019-20 schedule, the Lions will meet
