Situated just one block from the state capitol in Madison on State Street, the Orpheum Theatre brings live music, comedy and other events to the heart of downtown. The Orpheum first opened in March 1927 thanks in part to financier William Beecroft. The venue boasts a French Renaissance design on the interior complete with chandeliers, a grand staircase and a statue of the Greek artist Orpheus, for whom the theater is named. The original performers were vaudeville acts. The Orpheum Theatre was the first building in the state to offer air conditioning, and the unit takes up the entire basement of the theater. The Orpheum no longer looks exactly the same as the original; for example, the marquee outside has only been in place since 2016 when it replaced a subdued sign that was first installed in the 1950s. The theater was restored in 2013 to its former glory and continues to bring talent like comedians

The large marquee outside the theater indicates a spacious interior, but you might be surprised to learn that Orpheum Theatre seating can only accommodate 1,697 people. Before the 1960s, the theater could actually accommodate more patrons, around 2,400, but renovations took place to build The Stage Door Theatre. Aside from the loss of seating, the original stage was replaced so that just 6 feet of the original continued to exist.
Absolutely! Patrons can rent out the grand lobby, first level, orchestra pit, Apollo room or entire theater for their events. You can even rent the stage for a banquet of 80 people. It's a popular spot for weddings.
If you're in the audience at an Orpheum Theatre event, you'll be glad to know that you can purchase popcorn and snacks such as pizza and candy at the bar, which also serves a variety of drinks. Outside food and beverages are prohibited at the Orpheum.
There is a public parking lot conveniently located behind the venue at the intersection of Carroll and Dayton Streets. There are approximately a half dozen parking ramps within two blocks walk from the theater. If you prefer not to drive, local bus routes service the Orpheum Theatre.
Yes, the theater can accommodate patrons who require accessible seating.
