About Omar Souleyman

Omar Souleyman hails from Ra's al-'Ayn Syria, where he spent most of his life before he began his recording career in the mid 1990s. Omar's music career would have a steady build, beginning in his younger years when he was a full time worker and music was merely a hobby. For most of his life, the idea of becoming a performing artist a very far off pipe dream. Whatever low aspirations Souleyman had for himself could not hold back his unadulterated passion and latent musical talent. Omar Souleyman and his band's first branching out would be at weddings, with Omar becoming one of the most sought after wedding performers in Syria.

Omar's early wedding singer days would be the impetus that pushed him squarely into the spotlight that is still upon him today. Souleyman made hundreds of recordings of his wedding performances, gifting the performance to the bride and groom then later selling them commercially via local street vendors around Syria. Omar's early entrepreneurial days would allow him his big break years later, when his recordings made their way into the hands of California based music producers who introduced his music to a wider, international audience.

Much like the audiences that listen to Omar around the world, Souleyman's music is equally as dynamic and varied. Omar cites the cultural and ethnic diversity of his home in north eastern Syria as the foundation for his sound. Incorporated into his music are the traditional folk songs and instruments from Kurdish, Ashuri, Arabic, Turkish, and Iraqi culture. After blending all of these elements together, Omar added his own personal touch that was colored by his extensive love for music and his constant desire to push the limits of his musical comfort zones. After years of experimentation, Omar sped up the tempos and introduced non traditional instruments - including keyboards and Western style drum kits - to arrive at distinctive sound that we know and love today. The sounds of Souleyman today are upbeat and danceable, giving them a 21st century appeal that is still rooted in Middle Eastern traditions and culture.

Today, Omar performs at the biggest festivals across the US and Europe and collaborates with some of its biggest names. His highest profile collaboration to date is with Icelandic rocker Bjork, who reached out to Omar after feeling a deep connection with his unique sound. From Syria to New York, the infectious and vibrant Souleyman sound is on an unstoppable trajectory higher and higher into stardom.

Previous Hits

Omar's earliest hits came as compilation albums that would drop in 2006, 2009, and 2010. Sublime Frequencies, the first major label to take an interest in Souleyman's music, helped put together 2006's Highway to Hassake. It would be his first major release apart from his wedding recordings, and would be followed up three years later by Dabke 2020. Sublime Frequencies put out two more compilations, Jazeera Nights in 2010 and Haflat Gharbia in 2011, before Omar moved in a different election with a new label.

2011's Leh Jani would be released under Sham Palace, and showcase Omar as a performer in his own right instead of clips of his wedding performance. His true breakout would come with 2013's Wenu Wenu, his most comprehensive work to date, and would show both Omar's growth as well as his firm attachment to his musical and cultural roots.

Trivia

Omar is currently living in exile in Turkey with his family. Years of war have left his hometown uninhabitable, and Omar has said that the Syrian civil war weighs heavily on himself and his music.

One of Omar's most well known stories is his journey to retrieve his passport so he could perform at Austin's SXSW. Souleyman had multiple brushes with death as he traveled through Syria, avoiding bombs and execution squads from both sides.
