Coach Patty Gasso has led her teams to national championships in 2000 and 2013, followed by back-to-back Women’s College World Series titles in 2016 and 2017. With an all-time winning percentage of .699 (.801 in the Big 12 all-time), Gasso and the Sooners recruit some of the top players in the nation each year to remain among the nation’s elite. The list is long when naming Oklahoma alums among the best to play for the Sooners. Players drafted to the
National Pro Fastpitch
since 2010 include Amber Flores, Brianna Turang, Michelle Gascoigne, Jessica Shults, Keilani Ricketts, Shelby Pendley, Lauren Chamberlain, Nicole Pendley, Paige Parker, Paige Lowary, Shay Knighten, Caleigh Clifton and Sydney Romero. In addition to those drafted, Erin Miller, Jocelyn Alo, Grace Green, Falepolima Aviu and Giselle Juarez were named All-Americans since 2010. Destinee Martinez won the gold medal with Team USA at the III Pan American Championship in 2010. In 2013, Ricketts, Martinez and Chamberlain were each named to the National Team, setting a new record for Sooners selected for the same team.
Patty Gasso, who began her head coaching career at Long Beach City College, took charge of the Oklahoma Softball program in 1995. Since that time, she has developed an elite program consistently at the top of the rankings. Coach Gasso was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012. Gasso has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year 12 times. Through 2019, Gasso ranked fourth among Division I active softball coaches in winning percentage.
Two rivals stand out above the rest for the Oklahoma softball program. The
Alabama Crimson Tide
and Oklahoma Sooners have met six times in the Women’s College World Series. In 2016, the two met in the third game of the WCWS championship series. Oklahoma won game three with the help of Shay Knighten’s three-run homer in the eighth inning. It’s always a heated match-up when Oklahoma faces in-state rival the
Oklahoma State University
Cowgirls. Through 2019, OU and OSU had met 37 times with Oklahoma winning 34.
The University of Oklahoma softball team won its most recent championship in 2017. The Sooners defeated
Baylor
in game one of the series 6-3 including a three-run home run by Nicole Pendley in the first inning. In game two, OU defeated
Washington
3-1 with a home run by Sydney Romero. Oklahoma continued to roll in game three with a 4-2 victory over the
Oregon Ducks
. Game four was the longest game in the history of the championship, going 17 innings. Shay Knighten smashed a 3-run home run in the top of the 17th, leading the Sooners to a 7-5 victory over the
Florida Gators
. Game five was a fight to the finish as Oklahoma had to defeat Florida again for the national championship with a final score of 5-4.
