The Oakland Athletics were one of the American League's original 8 charter franchises. Founded as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901, the team has a long history of winning. The franchise moved in 1955 and become the Kansas City Athletics, before moving again to Oakland in 1968. The City of Oakland has been negotiating with ownership about a ballpark village near the Howard Terminal waterfront for years, but an announcement in 2024 confirmed that the owner will be moving the team, this time to Las Vegas. Oakland A's fans are understandably upset and have been doing all they can to change the tide.
The Oakland Athletics have a rich history, including being the only MLB team other than the NY Yankees to have managed a World Series “three-peat”, winning the Championships in 1972, 1973, and 1974. Founded in 1901, the Oakland Athletics have won 17 division titles, 15 American League Pennants, and appeared in 14 World Series games, bringing home 9 of those Championships. They have a long-standing divisional rivalry with the Los Angeles Angels dating back to when both teams joined the AL West in the 1960s.
Going to an Oakland Athletics home game at Oakland Coliseum means a lot to their fans. Even though the stadium has seen better days, to Oakland fans it is home and they're sad to be losing their MLB team. Get out to experience the amazing tailgate parties in the Coliseum parking lot and watch the A's play in Oakland, before the team makes their move to Vegas.

The Oakland Athletics play at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, commonly known as Oakland Coliseum. The stadium opened in Oakland, California, in 1966, and has a seating capacity of 63,000. Oakland Coliseum was built to house both football and baseball, resulting in concessions being made for both sports. Originally the stadium was shared with the Oakland Raiders and was reconfigured for each sport's needs, for every game. The ballpark is unique in that the playing field is dug down to 21 feet below sea level, so the stadium entrance brings fans in at the first seating tier. The building’s exterior is blocky concrete and there is a lot of grey concrete throughout, like many dual-purpose stadiums that were built during the 60s. Seats are a little further back from the action than most parks and the round shape gives the Coliseum the most foul ball territory of any MLB ballpark. Other than the luxury boxes, fans can wander the stadium during the game and there are a lot of interesting alcoves and places to catch a different view of the field action, including 2 party decks. There’s a lot of history behind this park and despite the rough edges, it feels like home to many A's fans. Visit the Wall of Fame section under the main concourse or stop by Shibe Park Tavern to view their memorabilia cases with artifacts from the team’s history. If you’re bringing the kids, turn them loose in the A’s Stomping Ground with fun, interactive games, a mini baseball field, photo booth, and play areas. Tailgating is allowed in the parking areas of the Coliseum and A’s fans know how to have pregame fun! Unfortunately, the Coliseum itself has been poorly maintained and is quite out of date. It sits at the bottom of every ballpark ranking list and its days are numbered, so catch a game there while you still can. The team is scheduled to move out of the stadium at the end of the 2024 season, which is the first step towards the team’s relocation in Las Vegas which, understandably has left many fans quite upset.

The Oakland Athletics are part of the American League West along with the Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Angels, the Seattle Mariners, and the Texas Rangers. Historically, the A’s biggest division rivals have been the Angels. They were both founding members of the AL West and have played against each other more than any other opponent, for over 50 years.
Notable current Oakland Athletics players include outfielder and designated hitter Brent Rooker, who came off a breakout 2023 and is outperforming last season’s numbers during 2024, putting him in contention for a Silver Slugger award; catcher Shea Langeliers is having his own breakout season, recording career high home runs in 2024; catcher and first baseman Tyler Soderstrom was a top prospect who struggled in his rookie year, but has impressed this season, improving his slugging power, home run and groundball rates.
The Oakland Athletics fans are known for being loyal, hardcore fans, but they’ve been seriously shaken by the announcement that their team will be moving to Las Vegas. Thousands of fans showed up at Oakland Coliseum for opening day 2024, but many boycotted the actual game, staying outside in protest of the planned move, which led to the lowest in-park opening day attendance numbers ever for the team. The boycott turned into a massive tailgate party and political statement, even the former mayor was in attendance. This is highly emotional for the fans who grew up going to A’s games in Oakland with their family and who looked forward to continuing the tradition with their own family. They're clear that they love and support the players, this was a message for owner John Fisher, who they’ve encouraged to “do the right thing” and either build a new stadium in Oakland or sell the team. Criticisms of Fisher include his minimal investment in the club and his disconnection from any of the A’s players or coaches. And what many see as the death blow for their team is how the payroll was drastically cut to one of the lowest in the League, while ticket prices were increased for the Coliseum which has been allowed to fall into complete disrepair. These are sad days for many Athletics fans, with some vowing to follow the Athletics in Vegas and others saying they are heartbroken and will be done with the Athletics once they are done with Oakland. Buy Oakland Athletics tickets on StubHub and get out to experience the end of an era in Oakland.
There are 45 Oakland Athletics in the National Baseball Hall of Fame as of 2023: Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Connie Mack, Nap Lajoie, Eddie Collins, Jimmy Collins, Rube Waddell, Eddie Plank, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Herb Pennock, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Charles Bender, Home Run Baker, Zack Wheat, Elmer Flick, Luke Appling, Waite Hoyt, Stan Coveleski, Lou Boudreau, Stachel Paige, George Kell, Enos Slaughter, Willie McCovey, Billy Williams, Catfish Hunter, Joe Morgan, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, Tommy Lasorda, Nellie Fox, Don Sutton, Orlando Cepeda, Dennis Eckersley, Dick Williams, Rich Gossage, Rickey Henderson, Joe Gordon, Whitey Herzog, Frank Thomas, Tony La Rusa, Mike Piazza, Tim Raines, and Harold Baines.
The Oakland Athletics pulled off a back-to-back-to back World Series “three-peat” during 1972, 1973, and 1974. The only other team to have managed that feat is the New York Yankees. Unfortunately, a difficult series of owners since the mid-nineties has hampered the team and put the damper on fun facts. On paper, the team should be more successful. They’ve won the second most Pennants in the American League and No. 3 in the MLB for most World Series wins (behind the Yankees and Cardinals). They have the goods to be one of the most storied MLB franchises, but ownership struggles and multi-decades long conversations about replacing the stadium have dragged the team down. What it has given the players is an individual opportunity to shine. Rickey Henderson swiped 867 of his 1,406 total stolen bases while with the Athletics. Mark McGwire hit 363 of his 583 career total home runs and won his sole Golden Glove award while with Oakland, Barry Zito won the Cy Young award pitching for the A’s, and the list goes on. The A’s are set to leave Oakland at the end of 2024 and will play in Sacramento for 3 seasons as they wait for their ballpark to be built in their new, Las Vegas home.
