'The Oak Ridge Boys is one of the longest-running and best-known gospel and country groups in the world, with a career that has spanned more than 60 years. It began in the '40s as the Oak Ridge Quartet. It became a well-known southern gospel group. The band changed its name to the Oak Ridge Boys in the '60s, and then it began concentrating on country music instead of gospel in the '70s. The band has achieved 17 No. 1 hits on the US country music charts, with many other songs ranking in the nation's Top 10. The Oak Ridge Boys have been the recipients of many awards over the years, including the 1969 GMA Dove Award for Album of the Year, the 1971 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance (other than soul), the 1978 Academy of Country Music Award for Top Vocal Group and the 1981 County Music Association Award for Single of the Year.'

'The Oak Ridge Boys: Going Nuclear'

'

The Oak Ridge Boys had an interesting beginning. The band got its start in 1943 as a country group called Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers. While the band was formed in Knoxville, Tenn., it was often asked to come to perform at a nuclear research plant in nearby Oak Ridge. Due to World War II, the plant employees and their families were restricted, and musicians were brought in to perform for the workers and entertain them. The band changed its format from country to gospel at this point because gospel songs were the ones most requested when it performed. In the '70s when the Oak Ridge Boys returned to performing country music, the band was really returning back to its roots. In 1947, the group began to record songs together, eventually becoming a member of the
