'The Notre Dame Lady Irish basketball team is a Division I basketball program that currently competes in the NCAA's Atlantic Coast Conference. The Lady Irish are the winners of two NCAA Championships. The first NCAA Tournament victory for the women of Notre Dame came in 2001. The 2001 team was led by Ruth Riley, a 6-foot-5 center who went on to star in the WNBA after her time at Notre Dame. Riley and the Lady Irish bested the Lady Boilermakers of Purdue 68-66 in the tournament final. The second championship for the women's basketball program of Notre Dame took place in 2018. 'The late Athletic Director Gene Corrigan professed there was no better person suited to be the head coach of the Lady Irish when he first hired Muffet McGraw for the job. The date of the hire was May 18, 1987, and 33 years later, McGraw is still the team's head coach. McGraw is one of five coaches in the history of college basketball to amass over 900 victories and has already been inducted into both the Indiana and Naismith Basketball Halls of Fame.'
