'The Northwestern Wildcats' basketball team is a member of the Big Ten. The organization experienced the majority of its success before World War II. An exception is that Head Coach Chris Collins did lead the Wildcats to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017. The team won its first game by defeating Vanderbilt with a score of 68–66, but in the second round, No. 1-seeded Gonzaga put an end to any momentum the Wildcats had picked up. Home games for the Wildcats take place at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., near the Northwestern University campus. While Northwestern does not have national championships in the modern era of college basketball, the Wildcats was retroactively awarded the pre-tournament Helms Championship for the year 1931. They were Conference Regular Season Champions in 1931 and 1933. Auburn is said to be one of the Wildcats' fiercest rivals due to the intense rivalry between the school's football teams. Among the Wildcats' most popular alumni are John Shurna, Evan Eschmeyer and Billy McKinney. Four All-Americans have been named from the organization. The most recent was in 1999.
