The Northeastern Huskies hockey program dates back to the 1929-1930 season. The Huskies have had the same home ice throughout the program's history. Huskies have played in the Hockey East division of NCAA Division I since the 1984-85 season. In Hockey East, they're matched up against nearby schools like Boston College,
Boston University
and
Providence College
frequently. In recent years, Northeastern has been rebuilding as one of the strongest hockey programs in the division. Since 2015-16, the Northeastern Huskies have posted three 20-plus-win seasons. They've appeared in the NCAA tournament three times in that period. Huskies head coach Jim Madigan isn't just posting wins, he's also having great success in player development. He had coached a Hobey Baker winner in Adam Gaudette , and players like goaltender Cayden Primeau have made it to the NHL. The current Huskies team includes high-scoring players like Aidan McDonough and Tyler Madden. Get your tickets at StubHub to see the Northeastern Huskies play.

The Northeastern Huskies play their home games at
Matthews Arena
. This arena is the oldest multipurpose sports building in the world. It opened in 1910 and is the oldest rink with artificial ice still in use. This venue was previously known as the Boston Arena. It was the first home of the Boston Bruins. Northeastern played there for the first time in 1930. The university became the owner of the building in 1979. It has since been re-named in honor of George J Matthews and Hope M Matthews. George Matthews is a 1956 graduate of Northeastern and serves as chairman emeritus of the Board. The Matthews Arena has been renovated several times over the decades. It features modern concession stands, an up-to-date press box and updated locker rooms.
''Jim Madigan has been the head coach of the Northeastern Huskies since 2011. Madigan played his college hockey at Northeastern in the early 1980s. He became an assistant coach at Northeastern right after his playing career, from 1986 to 1993. Following that, Madigan worked as a scout for NHL clubs including the New York Islanders. This culminated in a Stanley Cup win with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in 2009. Since returning to his alma mater, Madigan has led the Huskies to some great results including a 27-win season in 2018-19. The team has won the ECAC tournament twice since his arrival. The Huskies also pulled off a three-peat as champions at the Beanpot tournament in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Madigan's assistants include Jerry Keefe, Mike McLaughlin and Ed Walsh.'
'No, the Huskies haven't won an NCAA championship yet. The team has won the Hockey East conference tournament three times. The Huskies have also made it to the NCAA tournament seven times during their history, including three appearances since 2015.'
'Yes, Northeastern has a notable rivalry with Boston University's Terriers. These teams are located close to each other geographically and meet frequently since they play in the same conference. These are both highly regarded hockey programs, and the teams are generally evenly matched. It's not unusual to see ties or overtime wins when the Huskies and Terriers meet. In 2020, the Huskies defeated the Terriers in double overtime to claim a third-straight Beanpot tournament. The crowd is always riled up when these teams get together, with plenty of custom-made t-shirts and chants in the stands.'
