North Texas acquired the name Mean Green in 1966 in honor of its imposing defense, led by consensus All-American and future NFL Hall of Famer “ ”Mean“ ” Joe Greene. It replaced the school’s former name, the Eagles. The University of North Texas, then known as North Texas State, established its football program in 1913.
