North Texas acquired the name Mean Green in 1966 in honor of its imposing defense, led by consensus All-American and future NFL Hall of Famer “ ”Mean“ ” Joe Greene. It replaced the school’s former name, the Eagles. The University of North Texas, then known as North Texas State, established its football program in 1913. The hiring of Odus Mitchell in 1946 would begin the school’s most prosperous era with 122 wins and 10 conference titles as the school moved between the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf Coast Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference. Future Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry would take over the program in 1973. He led the Mean Green to a 10-1 record in 1977 and a 9-2 record in 1978 before departing for the
University of Iowa
. Since 2000, North Texas has been a semi-regular fixture at the
New Orleans Bowl
and the
Heart of Dallas Bowl
. In 2013, the school switched to Conference USA, which is made up of members located throughout the Southeast. If you want to experience the Mean Green tradition in person, then purchase tickets at the online vendor StubHub.
North Texas has played at
Apogee Stadium
since it opened in 2011. Located at the Interstate 35 junction in Denton, the stadium replaced Fouts Field where the team played between 1952 and 2010. Apogee Stadium has a seating capacity of 30,850. In addition to standard seating, the stadium features premium seating, including 20-seat luxury suites, the 12,000-square-foot HUB Club and the Touchdown Terrace.
A North Texas game has plenty for fans to experience. Two hours before the start of the game, fans can greet the team as it arrives at the stadium for the Mean Green March. The team is accompanied by the marching band, the cheerleading squad and the dance team. Around half an hour before kickoff, you can watch the North Texas Green Brigade marching band perform its pregame ritual on the Apogee Stadium field.
Tailgating opportunities are available on the hill east of the stadium, the main campus and the various parking lots in the area. Fans are expected to abide by the school’s tailgating policies. Tailgating must not impede the flow of traffic. Glass containers and kegs are prohibited although alcohol consumption is allowed. Parking lots open up at 7 a.m. on the day of the game. If you do not want to bring your own equipment, then you can purchase a tailgate package from the North Texas Athletic Department. The package includes a tent, banquet tables, chairs, parking passes and game tickets.
North Texas shares its biggest rivalry with the
Southern Methodist University Mustangs
from the American conference. Though they occupy different conferences, the two schools have played off and on since the first matchup in 1922. The game has been known as the Safeway Bowl since 1994. It is named after a quote from North Texas head coach Matt Simon in which he jokingly challenged SMU to play anywhere, anytime, including a Safeway parking lot.
