''The North Carolina Tar Heels women's basketball team competes in the NCAA's Atlantic Coast Conference. The program was first established in 1971 as part of the physical education department at the university. The Lady Tar Heels of North Carolina joined the ACC for the 1977-1978 season. The program was invited to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 1983. The North Carolina Tar Heels women's basketball team has enjoyed a good bit of success in conference play; the team has won nine conference tournament championships. The Lady Tar Heels have also emerged as the regular-season champions of the ACC on four occasions. The North Carolina women's basketball team has appeared in 27 NCAA Tournaments and earned their only tournament championship to date in 1994 on a last-second three-point shot by Charlotte Smith. Carmichael Arena
in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The arena was first used in 1965 and was then referred to as Carmichael Auditorium. Carmichael Arena was unavailable to the team for a year and a half once renovations began in 2008. However, the addition of a new air conditioning system, along with a video board and new sound system, has served to enhance the experience of fans when they attend a Lady Tar Heels basketball game.

Shayla Bennett averaged 11 points a game in her first year with the Lady Tar Heels after transferring from Gulf Coast State. Bennett is one of two players available on the current roster who averaged double digits in scoring a season ago. Janelle Bailey has made her presence known in the paint. The junior post player averaged 16 points and 8.9 rebounds per contest over her first two seasons as a Lady Tar Heel. Both Bailey and Bennett will be counted on to provide a scoring punch for the team. Madinah Muhammad transferred from

The 2019-2020 season marks the first season for Courtney Banghart as the coach of the North Carolina Lady Tar Heels. Banghart is the former coach at
Princeton University
and says that the importance of building relationships and the opportunities that come with new beginnings are important themes to her tenure in Chapel Hill.
''Charlotte Smith began her career as a Lady Tar Heel by earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1992. ESPN selected Smith as its National Player of the Year in 1995. Smith ended her career as a Lady Tar Heel with more than 2,000 points and 1,200 rebounds. She was also the second woman in college basketball history to dunk a ball in a live game. Ivory Latta finished her career at UNC with a school-best 2,285 points. She was also the most prolific three-point shooter in ACC history with 345 shots made from behind the arc. Latta was a three-time All-American and won a number of national player of the year awards.'
