'The exact origins of the name “ ”Tar Heels,“ ” is unknown, but many believe it is related to the tar, turpentine and pitch industries in the early years of the state's history. The name became widely used at some time during the Civil War era. One popular legend has it that it was used during the Civil War to say the state's Confederate troops “ ”stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels.“ ”'
'The Tar Heels have had many coaches over a long time span. In that time, there have been 10 coaches who have steered the Tar Heels to championship bowl games. These coaches are Carl Snavely, Mack Brown, Jim Hickey, Butch Davis, Dick Crum, Carl Torbush, John Bunting, Everett Withers, Bill Dooley and Larry Fedora. Of these coaches, Dooley has a personal record of three championship wins for the ACC, and Snavely won three championships as a member of the Southern Conference. Crum has a winning record of 72 wins during his 10 years with the Tar Heels. Jim Tatum and Snavely have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.'

The
Duke Blue Devils
, the
Virginia Cavaliers
and the
North Carolina State Wolfpack
are the biggest rivalries of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Duke and North Carolina are more known for their basketball rivalry, but they are also rivals on the football field. The winner gets the Victory Bell and paints it the shade of blue of the team's school. Virginia and North Carolina's history together is called the “ ”South's Oldest Rivalry,“ ” and North Carolina State and North Carolina have played each other every year as members of the ACC.
