The name became widely used at some time during the Civil War era. Of these coaches, Dooley has a personal record of three championship wins for the ACC, and Snavely won three championships as a member of the Southern Conference. was erected in 1927 and was named for the parents of William R. Kenan, Jr., a prominent donor and a graduate of North Carolina. The original stadium seated 24,000 people.
