Located in Pomona, Calif., the Pomona Raceway, also known as the
Auto Club Raceway
, is operated and owned by the NHRA. Originating in 1951, the idea of the Pomona Raceway was the dream of Pomona Police Chief Ralph Parker and the LA County fairgrounds who wanted to design a place where hot rod enthusiasts could safely hold races while taking the races off the local streets. The raceway first opened in 1961 and underwent a major renovation in 1992, adding a larger grandstand. There was also a repaving of the 1,320-foot racing surface, and the concrete launchpad was made longer, extending it to 660 feet long. VIP box suites were also added to the raceway in 2006.
