Mile High Nationals is one of 24 events featured in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. With an elevation of 5,800 feet, Bandimere Speedway is the highest race track in the NHRA. The high altitude creates a unique racing experience for drag racing, and driving in Denver is widely considered one of the most challenging weekends of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. The high elevation affects engine tune-ups and how race drivers handle aerodynamics. Bandimere Speedway was established in 1958 and held its first official NHRA points race in 1978. The track features a unique Track Cooling System and is one of two official NHRA national tracks to have a complete concrete racing surface that extends as much as 350 feet past the finish line.
The four winners of the 2019 Mile High Nationals were Tommy Johnson Jr. in the Funny Car category, Andrew Hines in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category, Greg Anderson in the Pro Stock category and Steve Torrence in Top Fuel category.
The NHRA is one of the races that count towards points for the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, which means every racer hoping to win this year’s title will likely be present at the event. Bandimere Speedway is the only home of the NHRA D5 Hall of Fame, also known as Taylor-Vertex High & Mighty Hall of Fame. Every year, fans flock to the monument during the Mile High Nationals. The Hall of Fame was founded in 2001 to celebrate those who made NHRA Division 5 racing special. The monument includes a tribute to Vern Moats, John Pusch, Brian and Vern Raymer, John Abbott and John Bandimere Jr. The 2019 inductions to The Hall of Fame included Tim Baxter and Art Carlton.
