Just about everyone around hockey knew that the NHL was onto something the league launched the Winter Classic in 2008 at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, although the fanfare actually surpassed high expectations. More than 71,000 fans turned up to catch the Pittsburgh Penguins take down the hometown Sabres in overtime, with Sidney Crosby netting the game-winner in a shootout to set the precedent. From there, the Winter Classic quickly turned into a bit of a phenomenon as it made the rounds to many of the biggest stadiums in the country, including a 2014 matchup that brought in more than 105,000 fans to Michigan Stadium to catch the Maple Leafs take down the Red Wings. In a little less than a decade, the Winter Classic has made the rounds and has emerged as one of the highlights of a long NHL regular season.
