The New York Yankees have won more World Series championships than any other MLB franchise and they’ve done it in style. They were the first (and only) team to ever win 4 back-to-back World Series games – and then they beat their own record, winning 5 in a row! The Yankees are the most popular Major League Baseball team and they give their fans a lot to be proud of.
The New York Yankees franchise was founded in 1903 when a team playing in Baltimore was purchased and moved to New York to compete as the New York Highlanders. Sports editors nicknamed them the “Yankees” and in 1913 the team officially adopted the name. The New York Yankees have won 27 division titles, 40 American League Pennants, and appeared in 40 World Series games, bringing home 27 of those Championships, which is a record not just in the MLB, but across all major professional sports in the U.S.A. The intense, century-old division rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox is one of the most well-known rivalries in all of sports, dating back to when Babe Ruth was traded in 1919 and the “Curse of the Bambino” that followed the BoSox.

The New York Yankees play at Yankee Stadium, which opened in the Bronx, New York, in 2009, with a seating capacity of 47,309. Yankee Stadium is clean, spacious, and stately, with wide concourses and state-of-the-art technology. This ballpark is part stadium and part museum, from the banners in the palatial Great Hall, to the Yankees Museum, Monument Park in center field, and the Yankees memorabilia showcased throughout. It was designed to echo many elements from the much loved old Yankee Stadium, which had been home to the franchise since 1923. The limestone and granite covered exterior and tall arched windows circling the building are reminiscent of old Yankee Stadium. Inside, the ballpark layout also references the original stadium, complete with bleacher seats, though the upper seating tiers are not stacked. They’ve even replicated the white picket frieze that ran along the rooftop of the old stadium. These familiar touches are blended with a new grandeur, starting with the imposing entrance that opens into a 31,000 square foot Great Hall, the largest open air public entrance of any sports venue in the world. Another obvious difference is the amount of room inside the new Yankee Stadium and the emphasis on fan comfort, including more leg room when sitting and the most non-premium padded seats of any Major League Park. More space allowed for the creation of luxury suites, club seats, a martini bar, and picnic areas, along with multiple gathering places and party decks. If you’re bringing the kids, they’ll love the Kids Clubhouse, with a mini-baseball field, playground equipment and other activities. Head to the game early, there’s a lot to see at Yankee Stadium.

Have you ever wondered why the New York Yankees don’t add their players’ names to the back of their jerseys? Before the 1960s no MLB teams added names on jerseys. People at the ballpark would buy a program that listed the players by number and the radio broadcasters would fill in those who were listening to the game at home. But with television sets being added in more homes, it made sense to add names and help fans quickly identify the players on camera. The Chicago White Sox were the first team to add their players names and most other MLB teams followed suit. The Yankees saw things differently though. They felt that adding names to the jerseys placed attention on the individual, taking focus away from the team effort. The Yankees state that the team's name is what is most important and no single player is bigger than the team itself. It's an attitude that has served them well over the years.
