New Japan Pro Wrestling has been bringing world-class professional wrestling to spectators for over 40 years. In 1972, the organization was started with Kanji Inoki as its president. The first New Japan Pro Wrestling battle event was held at the Ota Ward gymnasium. Since then, New Japan Pro Wrestling has gone on to become the largest pro wrestling organization in Japan. It has become such a force over the years that many familiar names from other wrestling organizations throughout the world have called New Japan Pro Wrestling home at one time or another. This includes wrestlers known from Impact, WCW and WWE. If you are a fan of New Japan Pro Wrestling, you can see its events in Tokyo or during Japanese tours. The stars of New Japan Pro Wrestling also tour regularly overseas, especially the United States. The first of these matches in the United States was the G1 Special, which took place in Long Beach, Calif., in 2017. Some of the biggest events put on by New Japan Pro Wrestling are Wrestle Kingdom, Sakura Genesis, Dominion, Destruction and Power Struggle. Some of the most famous have included Shinsuke Nakamura vs AJ Styles (Wrestle Kingdom 2015), Kazuchika Okada vs. Will Ospreay (G1 Climax 2019), Shinsuke Nakamura vs Kota Ibushi (Wrestle Kingdom 2015), Dynamite Kid vs. Tiger Mask (Sumo Hall Show 1983) and Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada (Wrestle Kingdom 2017).
Strong style is a mix of MMA, jiu-jitsu and judo that many wrestlers in New Japan Pro Wrestling utilize in their moves. It is believed by some that the wrestlers that practice this style hit harder than their Western contemporaries.
One exciting difference that you'll encounter when you see a live New Japan Pro Wrestling event is that count-outs are longer than they are for Western professional wrestling. Typically, in a Western wrestling match, if the action happens outside the ring for 10 seconds, there is a disqualification. In Japanese pro wrestling, wrestlers can fight outside the ring for up to 20 seconds without risking disqualification. This can make for just as many wrestling thrills outside the ring as inside.
Over the years, New Japan Pro Wrestling has toured through a number of U.S. cities. Some of the tour stops have included venues in Nashville, Miami, Durham and Tampa. Check back at StubHub to learn more about future tour stops in the United States.
