''Since its inception in 1975, the Nebraska Cornhuskers Women's team has become one of the top-rated groups for volleyball. The team boasts more wins than any other college volleyball program to date, including five NCAA championships. First Head Coach Pat Sullivan had a relatively short-lived career with the Cornhuskers. The brief time line didn't stop her from compiling an impressive 83 wins against just 21 losses in the first two seasons for the team. After Sullivan, Terry Pettit spent over two decades as head coach. He helped establish the beginnings of the reputation for which the team is known today, with an impressive 694 wins. He was also responsible for the first national win for the team in 1995. Thanks in part to the success of the team during his era, the University of Nebraska became one of the first in the nation to provide athletic scholarships to female students. The women's volleyball team continued to improve over the next several seasons, racking up a rare undefeated record of 34-0 at the turn of the century. The Cornhuskers team has something of a rivalry with fellow conference member
Penn State
. The team has faced off against the Nittany Lions several times throughout various conference matches. The 2016 conference saw the Cornhuskers take home several wins against Penn State. Although not directly responsible for the loss of the Cornhuskers' 90-streak home game successes in 2009, Penn State surpassed this record the following year.
