Every spring, ice hockey fans get to see who will be crowned the national champ in the NCAA Frozen Four tournament. Out of a pool of 16 teams, four teams move on to compete in the Frozen Four semifinal and final games. The winner of the April championship game is crowned the Frozen Four champion. The Frozen Four championship tournament began in 1948, with Michigan winning over Dartmouth. At that time, it was known as the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship. It continued with this name until 1999 when it was renamed the Frozen Four. The Frozen Four consists of semifinal and final games, which take place one weekend in April and include the final four winning teams from the Regionals. The Frozen Four final takes place at a different venue every year. Ice hockey fans look forward every year in anticipation both for the announcement of the 16 teams chosen for the Regionals and for the naming of the Frozen Four venue. Where is the NCAA Frozen Four championship held?

The first Frozen Four championships were held in Colorado Springs for several years. Afterward, the championships have been held in a different location every year, with some repeat locations over this time span. Some of the cities that have previously hosted the Frozen Four are Minneapolis, Buffalo, Denver, Chestnut Hill, Utica, Providence, Duluth, Syracuse and Pittsburg. What is the format for the NCAA Frozen Four championship?

There are 16 teams that play in a single-elimination tournament that leads up to the finals in the Frozen Four. These games take place at four different locations, with four teams competing in single-elimination matches at each. The two winners from each of the four locations will then compete against each other at the same regional locations. The winner of each of the Regionals will advance to the Frozen Four semifinals. The winner of the Frozen Four will have won four tournament games in a row when they are crowned national champions.

What is the selection process for the NCAA Frozen Four?

The NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Championship chooses 16 teams to play in a single-elimination tournament. Six of the chosen teams are conference champions that are automatically qualified, and the remaining 10 teams are chosen at large by the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee. Four of the 16 teams will be seeded, with each seeded team placed at one regional location.
