Way back in 1939, Henry V. Porter, an official from Illinois High School, gave March Madness its name. He wanted to describe the excitement that precedes the college basketball tournament, which runs from mid-March to early April. The tournament grew from a single invitational game under the sponsorship of the Illinois High School Association to a statewide tournament. When it started, sixteen teams, then referred to as the “Sweet Sixteen,” drew huge crowds in the University of Illinois Gymnasium. Today, the NCAA organizes the tournament which sees sixty-eight college ball teams going against each other in the single-elimination tournament. After the first weekend, only sixteen teams will still remain standing. These remaining sixteen teams are referred to as the Sweet Sixteen. The second weekend knocks off eight teams to leave the Elite Eight. From there, four semi finalists battle it out for a spot in the finals, with the winners of the Final Four matchups facing off in the title game. Does your school have what it takes to survive and ultimately, reign supreme as tourney champs? Find out live! Check out the March Madness game schedule and get your tickets at StubHub today.
