The NCAA sponsors an annual baseball tournament, culminating in the College World Series. It takes place each year during the early summer months of May and June. The competition pits the best 64 NCAA baseball teams against one another with four team groups competing at 16 regional locations throughout the US. From Regionals to the College World Series final, there are four rounds of competition. Teams compete using a double-elimination series at the Regionals, a best of three series at the Super Regionals, a double-elimination round to determine the two teams in the CWS final and a best of three series to determine who wins the CWS. When the organization chooses ECU as a NCAA Baseball Greenville Regionals games host, play occurs at

To host a Regional competition, the university must have made it to the list of 64 competitors. The NCAA typically names the top seed in each region as the regional location, but it does also weigh factors like geography and financial considerations. Host schools that win their Regional may also host Super Regionals. Should a Super Regional location school lose its games, the schools still competing bid to become the replacement location. Regional hosts benefit from home field advantage, last at bat, a boost in tourism and publicity coverage.
Although ECU has hosted five NCAA baseball Regionals, they have not all been played at Clark-LeClair Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 5,000. The stadium was erected in 2005, so ECU could locally host such events. The first two times it served as a Regionals host, it used other fields - Wilson in 2001 and Kinston in 2004.
ECU has qualified and competed in the NCAA baseball Regionals 31 times in the history of its baseball program. The Pirates have reached the Super Regionals four times but have missed making it to the CWS. The school previously competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and won its national baseball championship in 1961.
The NCAA Regionals brings together some of the best baseball players US colleges have to compete in the battle to reach the CWS. Regionals afford you the rare opportunity to watch these baseball players before they turn professional and play in the Major Leagues after graduation. ECU has produced 24 Major League pros, seven in the past decade. They include Seth Maness, Chris Heston, Mike Wright, Shawn Armstrong, Jeff Hoffman, Jharel Cotton and Jack Reinheimer.
The East Carolina Pirate Club organizes some group tailgate events before baseball games that are open for all to attend. Pirates baseball also opens the gates to the stadium two hours before game time. This provides two hours for tailgate parties. The university sells food and alcohol at its athletic events although it was previously a dry campus. There are parking lots that allow alcohol consumption on campus, but you cannot bring your outside alcohol into the stadium. You might join an ongoing tailgate party rather than host your own. ECU has a well-earned reputation as a party school with an active tailgate scene.
