NBA Basketball

The NBA was created in 1949 when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) merged. The original league consisted of 11 teams, today there are 30 teams, 29 in the United States and 1 from Canada. The BAA was founded by owners of major hockey arenas in the Northeastern, and Midwestern, United States, and Southern Canada, in 1946. The first game played in NBA history was at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada, where the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers. Basketball is a widely accessible game, since it requires minimal equipment to play. Basketball nets are a common sight in driveways across North America and the popularity of the NBA continues to grow, especially with the younger crowd. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a newcomer to the fun of NBA games, there’s something truly special about catching a game, in person. NBA television broadcasts capture fantastic closeups of the action, but most basketball fans agree that there’s absolutely nothing like the electric excitement of being courtside for a live NBA game!

How many teams are in the NBA?

The National Basketball Association, known as the NBA, is made up of 30 teams which are divided into 2 conferences. Each conference is further broken down into 3 divisions with 5 teams in each division. The Eastern Conference has the Atlantic, Central, and Southeast divisions and the Western Conference has the Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest divisions.

How does an NBA season work?

The National Basketball Association regular season begins around the third week of October each year, immediately following the preseason games. Each individual team will play 82 games during the regular season, through to the playoffs in April. These consist of 4 games against each of the other 4 teams within their own division (16 games), 4 games against 6 different teams outside of their division, but within their conference (24), 3 games against the remaining 4 teams within their conference (12), and 2 games against each of the 15 teams in the opposing NBA conference (30). There’s a 5-year rotation list that tracks which outside-of-division conference teams are only played against 3 times that season. The top 8 teams from each NBA conference then play 3 rounds of elimination playoffs in a bid to win their own Conference Championship. The 16 teams meet each other in the first playoff round of their respective conference. 8 teams (4 winners in each conference) then move on to the second playoff round. The 4 winning teams (2 in each conference) then play each other in the third round to determine the Eastern and Western Conference Championship winners. The 2 Conference Championship winners meet each other in the NBA Finals and play for the chance to bring home the NBA Championship and the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

What is a live NBA game like?

In one word... impressive! Heading to the arena to watch a live NBA game offers a completely different experience than watching it on television. The atmosphere and energy are on another level, and you get to see all the action on the court instead of just what the TV cameras are focused on. You feel like you’re part of the game, cheering along with thousands of other fans, hearing the players’ shouts, and watching rivalries play out in real time. Seeing your favorite players in person also gives you a true sense of how tall they really are, and just how fast they move. Half-time shows featuring music, dancing, and other entertainment add to the overall fun of a live game but witnessing the talent of some of the most skilled basketball players in the world, in person, is a feeling that can’t be replicated on your couch, no matter how big your screen. And there’s always the chance you’ll be there live to witness a magical, historic basketball moment. NBA games are family friendly, and some teams offer pre-game events like fan meet-and-greets, or autograph sessions. Buy NBA tickets for the game of your choice on StubHub.
