When Natalie Merchant was just 17, she joined the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. 10,000 Maniacs, originally called Still Life, got its start in Jamestown, New York. Originally, Merchant was invited to do some vocal work for the band and then after a time, invited to be a permanent member. The band spent a lot of time on the road in 1983 and 1984, giving Merchant plenty of practice performing live. The name 10,000 Maniacs was inspired by a low-budget horror flick called
Two Thousand Maniacs
.

The DVD is slightly different. It also includes Life is Sweet, Senior Don Gato, Break Your Heart and Waterbound, which are songs not found on the CD.
''Her distinctive voice sounds as good live as it does on her studio albums. She easily expresses a variety of emotions through her voice: vulnerability, power and joy, with her signature vibrato coming through. Audiences enjoy bantering with her between sets. Merchant encourages the audience to sing along with her and teaches the audience lyrics to a new song to do just that. Her show is quite interactive.'
