The alternative rock band Mt. Joy, which blends together blues, Americana and folk music, was created by longtime childhood friends Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper. They chose the name Mt. Joy based on a mountain in Valley Forge National Park close to their Philadelphia homes. Heavily inspired by the folk traditions and popular rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s, the band cites
Paul Simon
,
Bob Dylan
and
The Grateful Dead
as major influences. The unique synergy between the band members is evident in its music and live performances.
Childhood friends Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper shared some of the same musical ambitions while growing up together in Philadelphia. After briefly going their separate ways, they met up in Los Angeles and began writing music in 2016. The result of their collaboration was the critically acclaimed single Astrovan about the importance of pursuing one's dreams. Quinn was still working a full-time job and attending night classes when the song became an unexpected hit. He put aside everything to pursue a musical career with Mt. Joy. After the size of the band grew to five people, Mt. Joy was invited to play at the
Made in America Festival
and the
Newport Folk Festival
. The band also appeared as an opening act for
The Shins
,
The Revivalists
,
The Head and the Heart
and more. The same year, Mt. Joy released the single Silver Lining, which reached No. 1 on the Adult Alternative chart. The success of the song led to a late-night appearance on Conan O'Brien's show. This whirlwind first year finally culminated with the release of the band's self-titled debut album in 2018. The band's next single, Jenny Jenkins, reached No. 5 on the Adult Alternative chart. On the 2018 festival circuit, Mt. Joy performed at the
Life Is Beautiful Festival
in Las Vegas and the
Austin City Limits Music Festival
in Texas.
