'About Monster Truck'

'Monster Truck would come together in 2009 with Jon Harvey on bass and lead vocals, Jeremy Wilderman on guitar and vocals, Brandon Bliss on organ and vocals, and Steve Kiely on drums and vocals. They have already snagged a Juno Award from their native Canada, and, as their name would imply, Monster Truck nails the hard hitting rootsy classic rock style. The group would release their eponymous EP in 2010 on Dine Alone Records and The Brown EP would arrive the following year. Their debut full-length release Furiosity would come out in 2013 on Universal.'

2013 would be a golden year for the band Monster Truck. They released a Top 20 Canadian album, Furiosity, and their single Sweet Mountain River would make it into the Canadian Top 100. Best of all, Monster Truck would win a Juno Award in the category of Breakthrough Group of the Year. They were up against some stiff competition from Hey Ocean!, Yukon Blonde, the Pack A.D., and Walk off the Earth, but there was no doubt that this hard hitting, hardworking band deserved the win.

What makes Monster Truck's Top 20 debut album Furiosity so great is its tasty blues guitar licks backed up with a Southern rock foundation. Jon Harvey's dominating vocals are explosive on the opening track Old Train. His relentless rasp is the perfect match to the raunchy Sabbath-inspired riffs courtesy of Jeremy Wilderman. Harvey's bass chops are deliciously dirty while Steve Kiely destroys the drum kit for this massive first track. The Lion features blues style guitar and more punishment for the drum kit, and Harvey displays his versatility with melodic vocals with occasional flashes of his distinctive roughness. The standalone single Sweet Mountain River has Hendrix overtones of distorted dreaminess. The drumming remains demonic and powerful while Harvey delivers some aching Zeppelinesque vocals.

But the biggest track on this album is the seven-and-a-half minute epic, For the Sun. It sets off with a subtle, ambient feel guided by Wilderman's understated guitar and Kiely's measured beats. The vocals are soft and soulful, and with its classic rock sensibilities, you could easily imagine that you were listening to an undiscovered Zeppelin track. As the song builds, the guitar work becomes truly sensational, winding up to a gripping finale of flawless instrumentation. Indeed, For the Sun could be Monster Truck's Stairway to Heaven.

Two minute rocker Boogie hits hard as ever, as does the thrashy, trashy, energetic The Giant. Brandon Bliss starts to shine a bit brighter from this point on as his organ and keyboard work becomes increasingly effective.

This landmark album concludes with My Love is True, a classically Sabbath-like track with slow and morose guitar rhythms and soft yet constructive drumming. This last track could easily be a hallmark piece of southern rock, with an ineffable crescendo building up to typically wild drumming and heavy guitar work. An ethereal, perfectly placed female ensemble provides the concluding backing vocals, and the song (and album) gently fades away instead of finishing with a grinding halt – a fitting way to prove Furiosity's alacrity and precise variability.

This young band sounds as if they have been recording and performing for decades already, despite the fact that Furiosity is their very first long player. This release is a brilliant start for a promising band, and one of the brightest gems is clearly guitar hero Jeremy Wilderman. Monster Truck is a dirty, driving band that will no doubt continue their stunning trajectory that has set pulses racing. Let the melee begin.
